Get In Control Of Your Money

How does choosing to pursue personal growth impact one’s career and life satisfaction?

I've been around a lot of people who came from similar circumstances as mine. I believe it's a conscious choice to want to be better. Some people live in the environment they come from and think, "It’s never going to get better, so this is just how it is." That was never me. I always knew I was destined for great things. I pushed myself through high school, then college, and even earned a master’s degree. After that, I started my own business and have also helped my friends with their businesses. To me, it’s important to do something that makes you happy. That’s my ultimate goal—finding happiness in what I do.

Why is building relationships crucial when starting out as a solo entrepreneur?

Ironically, I fell into bookkeeping by accident. I was working at a physical therapy clinic, and when I became pregnant with my daughter, I couldn't do any physical tasks. So, I moved to the front desk, where I got into bookkeeping. I learned a lot on my own through research and studying, and I grew to love it. Eventually, I wondered if I could do it for myself.

At the time, my now-husband, who I was dating then, had started his own cleaning company, which I helped him launch. It was doing well, and we were financially comfortable, so I decided to give it a try on my own. That’s when things took off. I started as an independent contractor, gained a few clients, built relationships, and quickly realized the importance of networking—especially since it was just me at the beginning.

What benefits can business owners gain from understanding their financial numbers?

I always teach people that bookkeeping is essential, whether they sign up for it or not. We even share tips in our monthly newsletter to keep it top of mind. I focus on helping those who try to wear every hat in their business because I believe you can't expand if you're doing everything yourself. You'll get stuck, frustrated, and might eventually give up.

For those who want to take bookkeeping off their plate, we're here to help. What sets me apart from other bookkeepers is that I include an educational aspect. I want my clients to understand their numbers and use them to grow their businesses.

Why is delegating important for reducing stress and improving efficiency?

I think the best decision I made was to start delegating work. Like many business owners starting out, I tried to wear every hat because I didn’t know what I was doing. Hiring people to manage tasks, like bookkeeping, when I’m not able to has been a game-changer. I also hired an executive assistant who has been a lifesaver since I’m terrible with emails, especially with everything else going on.

It’s been the best decision—it has alleviated a lot of the stress I felt as a business owner. I always tell people that if you can hire someone to help with just one thing, do it. You never know how much it can help.
