How can business owners focus on strategic planning?

Michael Gerber talks about this in The E-Myth and The E-Myth Revisited. Often, we spend time in our business but not working on our business. Part of this is stepping away from the day-to-day. What I do with ideas that come up is I make a note, usually in Evernote or somewhere similar, and save it as something to revisit later. I regularly set aside time to think about these ideas. Every 90 days, I take two days or nights away to focus solely on the business. I use a whiteboard, brainstorm, and reflect on what’s working and what needs attention. This dedicated time helps me work on the business, not just in it.

What qualities help business owners stay calm during challenges?

I’ve always been a fan of quotes, and one I like comes from Warren Buffett, one of the greatest investors. Someone asked him, "What’s the most important quality of a successful investor?" His answer was interesting—he said the number one quality is temperament. If you’re someone who loses control every time something unexpected happens, it can be a big problem.

What’s the best way for business owners to brainstorm new ideas?

When I first got into investing, I explored all sorts of ideas. I would take Friday afternoons, go to a Starbucks, and brainstorm different concepts. At the time, I was working in medical sales and had a bit of free time to do this. I considered starting a mouthguard company where people could order custom night guards by mail. I was just exploring different business ideas.
